One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned in leadership involves standing in a chow line with other officers waiting for our enlisted soldiers to get their food. The reason we stood in line rather than going ahead of our soldiers directly related to the 3 M’s of leadership taught to us in our officer basic courses. Read more …
“Act like men.” These words from the Apostle Paul might sound offensive to people in our society who would argue that there are no significant differences between men and women. They would find Paul’s admonition nonsensical, maintaining that any variations between men and women are merely cultural constructs without any founding in differences in biology or gender.
One reason the Holy Spirit indwells us is to sanctify us. This is both a one time event and an ongoing process. When we come to Christ through repentance and faith, we are sanctified (set apart as holy) by the Holy Spirit.
Balance is an essential need for all of us.
I especially appreciate my need for balance when I’m training in martial arts. We call it “staying in our frame.” Being in frame refers to having a strong foundation from which we can strike or defend when facing an opponent. When someone is in frame, they have good balance and cannot be thrown or knocked down by an opponent. It’s easy to stay in frame when you’re not moving. It’s much more challenging to do it when you’re mobile.

Queen Jezebel was angry and threatened Elijah’s life because he killed her false prophets.
Our natural tendency as human beings is to try to hold on to our lives. We don’t want to give up control of our lives to anything or anyone. People want to be the captains of their souls. We seek to build our own kingdoms rather than to seek the Kingdom of Christ. The irony is that this pursuit of control is futile because only God is in control of everything that happens in our lives and in the universe.
Jesus asked the question to determine His disciples’ faith in Him. He wanted to know more about who they thought He was than He was interested in what the crowds thought. The question Jesus asked the disciples is the most important question we will ever answer in our lifetimes.
They say that time is our most precious commodity. This saying is true because we cannot get more of it nor can we get it back if we’ve already spent it. In that light David gives us some wisdom stating:
Our natural tendency as human beings is to try to hold on to our lives. We don’t want to give up control of our lives to anything or anyone. Christ followers lose their lives to follow Jesus.
