Worthy of It All

There are a myriad of hymns and worship songs that speak about the worthiness of God. Worthy of Worship, Worthy of It All, He is Worthy, Is He Worthy, Worthy of My Song, and so on. These songs rightly remind us that God is worthy of our worship and devotion, but how does that translate to everyday life? How can I live in a way that honors God and shows His worthiness?

Worthy of My Surrender

The first step in expressing worship to God is surrendering our lives to Him. Without this first step, we cannot truly worship Him because we are still His enemies (Romans 5:10). Before we can offer any praise to God, we must be reconciled to Him through Christ. Jesus welcomes us with open arms, but we must surrender to Him. Romans 10:9-10 promises us that “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” Salvation is the first step to worshiping God, and it involves surrendering our lives to Him and allowing Him to direct our steps. Surrendering to God affirms His worthiness.

Worthy of My Sanctification

Sanctification is a word that refers to the action or process of being made holy. It indicates both a point-in-time event and a process. When we surrender to God, we are made holy in His sight through the sacrifice of Christ, but at the same time, we are not completely holy in the way we live our lives. The process of becoming sanctified in actuality is a joint effort between us and the Holy Spirit. God works in us as we work out our salvation. Paul says it this way in Philippians 2:12-13: “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” God is worthy of our best efforts in this process of sanctification. He is honored when we confess and repent of our sin. He is exalted as we read the Bible, pray, and practice other spiritual disciplines. He is glorified as our lives display the fruit of the Spirit. Our efforts to grow in Christlikeness are an act of worship, and we should offer our very best efforts to become more like Jesus.

Worthy of My Sacrifice

As we grow in our lives as Christians and seek to follow God’s guidance, we may come to points when we believe God is leading us to do something that seems difficult to us. For example, for someone who is introverted, talking to someone about Jesus may seem intimidating and uncomfortable. God is worthy of our efforts to share His love with others, and He is honored when we overcome our hesitations and reach out. Sometimes, God leads His followers to make bigger sacrifices than just stepping outside their comfort zones. Sometimes, He may call us to go into situations that involve greater sacrifice. He may lead us to serve in a way that we have never done before, such as teaching a Bible study or serving in a new ministry at our churches. He may call us to go on a short-term mission trip in a country that doesn’t speak our language. He may even lead us to leave our homes to go to a seminary to prepare for vocational ministry. He may call us to live out our lives on the mission field overseas. For some people, God may call them to sacrifice their very lives for the sake of the gospel. Whatever He calls us to do, God is worthy of our sacrifice. Maybe today, we can start by asking God what sacrifice He is calling us to make for His glory, remembering that Jesus has already sacrificed everything for us.

Worthy of My Songs

As we seek to live out our lives for the honor and glory of God, our hearts should be filled with a joy that overflows into worship. The Bible calls us to praise God both for who He is and for what He has done for us. He is worthy of our songs. Sometimes those songs may be joyful and celebratory as we recount God’s blessings in our lives. Other times, our songs might be sung through tears and with heavy hearts as we seek to honor God even in the valleys and trials of life. Either way, God is worthy of adoration for who He is as the holy Creator and Sustainer of the world. He is also worthy of our praise for how He has loved us and allowed us to know Him as our Father and Friend. How many attributes of God can we recall today to help us express His worth?

God is worthy of it all – our surrender, our sanctification, our sacrifice, and our songs. How can we live our lives today to honor God and show His worth?
